Teen Gothic

I've never been controversial on Reddit but this is a touchy subject for some people and that might happen today so😭 ps talking about race isn't political.

Ok let's start with I love the goth subculture it means alot to me I feel at home and comfortable something no other thing has sparked in me. Though as a black goth I do get uncomfortable with the racism/racial ignorance at times. I see people get locs and call them dreads when there's a long history behind this cultural hairstyle.

Some short history: Black people's hair was seen as disgusting and cut off by slave owners to dehumanize us because our hair meant a lot to us. So we twisted out hair into locs and began to rebel. The racist called our hair "dreadful" that's where you get dreadlocks from.

It feels disrespectful when people try to mimic our hair and it's in general harmful since we are still being discriminated against based off our hair. Plus non black people can't locs their hair naturally. Especially not centuries ago what other cultures may have had were hair they never washed held together by the oils puss dirty etc untwisted or maintained. That's completely different from locs

Here's some arguments ik will come up because I get the same thing every time "Vikings" : Viking Belts where found and according to historians they had combs so no they didn't have locs and two Viking is an occupation not a culture

"It's just hair" no it's culture and a culture that's holding up a lot of black people especially with how much we are put through

"It's been in the goth community" because the goth community and the alternative movement did not in fact start in 1980s Britain but was started by black people with hoodoo and their darker music and way of dressing "I put a spell on you" is the oldest alternative song I know and the movement has grown and gone through stages to get to what we have right now so ofc it was different back then if you wanna argue that.

And finally this isn't an attack so don't take it like one please peaceful discussions and open minds to hearing a black goth's side to the community as someone who recently entered last year

All Goths are different and some will have varying opinions but I often find myself wishing that Goth was the majority instead of the minority.

As in, you could walk into a supermarket or public gathering in extreme goth and nobody would stare or even notice because everyone else would be Goth too so it wouldn't stand out as being weird or different.

I wish the world was like this. Do you?

Hiii everyone I’m having a really hard time meeting other gothic people Specifically people that know about the culture, music, literature, & WHAT GOTH FASHION ACTUALLY IS I hate to sound like a pompis bastard but I tend to meet alt people who are only alt due to recent trends. And when we talk about music people like pierce the veil tend to come up 🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧as ….goth music snd it makes me wanna rip my hair out don’t get me wrong a very long time ago I was emo/scene but mind you I was 12 at the time. Bring a 21 year old goth that has been involved in the scene for a really long time due to my older sister being a late 80s/90s goth. I don’t want to make it seam like I’m discriminating on anyone I have friends of all styles but I’m a bit of the odd one out and not saying that’s an issue either I just wanna find more people of similar taste 😭😭😭😭sorry for my rant this was probably not cohesive at all 🤣

After seeing Testament (they/them) announced for Guilty Gear Strive, I felt like we needed a goth character appreciation thread here. What are some of your favorite goth characters in fictional media, be it movies, tv, anime, etc?

Some of my favorites are: Misa Amane from Death Note, V from Devil May Cry, and Matt Miller from Saints Row (he's more of a cybergoth than trad but I still count him).

A few honorable not-so-goth-but-close mentions are Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes (wears a joy division parody shirt and references post-punk music) and Gaige from Borderlands (some of her skins reference post-punk bands, but she's definitely more punk than goth).

Sorry if this is not fit for this sub, not too sure if this belongs in r/goth or r/gothfashion (since most of these characters dress goth but might not be into the music).

mine has to be the goth kids from south park, although they're very stereotypical. i find them funny.

Now that’s not to say I haven’t, or that I don’t still own SOME but, it’s just not a priority for me anymore. I feel like I’m not valid a lot of the time. Just looking for confirmation that I’m not alone in this. 😀
